Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced a state honor for skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych after he was banned from competing at the Winter Olympics.
Heraskevych was removed from the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics because he wore a helmet paying tribute to Ukrainian athletes and coaches killed in the war with Russia.
The International Olympic Committee said the helmet violated rules against political statements during competition.
Zelenskyy strongly criticized the decision, saying it goes against justice and the principles of the Olympic movement. He said Heraskevych was simply honoring those who lost their lives.
The move has sparked debate about politics, war, and freedom of expression at the Olympic Games.
