The European Union launched membership talks with two nations – Moldova and Ukraine. Russian troops seized Crimea in 2014 to deter Ukraine from moving closer to the West. Crimea’s annexation was part of a chain of events that set the neighbours on path to war. Ukraine’s accession talks were set in motion at an intergovernmental meet in Luxembourg. Just a few hours later, Moldova also launched its European Union membership talks. Events a major milestone on their European paths, the talks could take years to conclude. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, neighbouring Moldova has faced several crises. The crises have at times raised fears the country might also be in Russia’s crosshairs. Errant missiles have landed on Moldova’s territory during the Russia-Ukraine war. An energy crisis was sparked in Moldova after Russia decided to cut gas supplies. Candidates must bring their laws & norms into line with those of EU in 35 policy areas. The policy areas, known as chapters, range from taxation and energy to judicial rights. Unanimous agreement must be given by all 27 member nations to open or close chapters. The provisions give ample opportunity to demand more work or to delay proceedings. Hungary has routinely put the brakes on European Union and NATO support for Ukraine. Hungary takes over the European Union’s rotating presidency from Belgium in July.
