The arrest of Youth Congress President Uday Bhanu Cheb over a shirtless protest at an AI summit has triggered a heated political debate. BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi defended the arrest, arguing that entering the Bharat Mandapam premises during an international event with heads of state constitutes criminal activity, not legitimate protest. He stated, ‘When you move inside the house and start doing anything, then it becomes a criminal activity.’ Trivedi emphasized security concerns and accused Congress of engaging in ‘anarchy and destructive politics.’ Congress leader and jurist Dr. Abhishek Manu Singhvi countered that the government has criminalized peaceful dissent, asserting, ‘There is not the slightest violence. There is a verbal exchange at the highest, and there is no violence.’ Singhvi argued that the protest lacked intent to cause violence and that weaponizing criminal law against peaceful protesters reflects intolerance of dissent. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi described the arrested workers as ‘Babbar Sher’ and accused Prime Minister Modi of ‘murdering democracy,’ while also demanding scrapping of the Indo-US trade deal.
