New York City has made history – electing Zoran Mamdani, a 34-year-old Ugandan-born, Queens-raised democratic socialist, as its new mayor. With 57% of the vote, Mamdani crushed Andrew Cuomo’s $42-million independent bid, sweeping every borough except Staten Island – and even winning 62% of Jewish precincts in Brooklyn.
The son of filmmaker Mira Nair, Mamdani ran on bold promises: rent freezes, universal childcare, and a wealth tax on fortunes above $10 million. His victory speech directly addressed Donald Trump, who has called him a "Jew-hater" and "communist" while threatening to withhold $7 billion in federal aid.
