Yamuna's Fury: Delhi Submerged, Residents Battle Filthy Floodwaters | Ground Report | India Today

The Yamuna river is rising in the national capital after the release of water from the Hathni kund barrage. The water level crossed the 206-meter mark at the old railway bridge, surpassing the warning level of 204.5 meters. The situation has led to flooding in low-lying areas, forcing residents to evacuate to temporary shelters. Many people have lost their homes and belongings, facing difficult conditions with contaminated water. One resident stated, "She will give mud, we will live in mud. She will give water, we will live in water." The flooding highlights ongoing issues of encroachment on the Yamuna’s floodplains, identified as Zone O, with experts also pointing to the impact of climate change and extreme rainfall events. The government’s response includes opening barrage gates to manage the water flow, but challenges in providing sufficient aid to all affected people remain.
