The India Today Magazine GDB (Gross Domestic Behaviour) Survey highlights a striking paradox in women’s safety in India. While 86 per cent of respondents say they feel safe using public transport, nearly 44 per cent of women report experiencing harassment, revealing a clear gap between perceived safety and real-life experiences.
The survey also points to hesitation when it comes to reporting crimes. Around 84 per cent of respondents say they would feel safe reporting violent crimes, yet official records show that FIR registration rates remain extremely low.
Legal experts note systemic challenges in the justice system. These include defunct emergency helplines, delayed or unprofessional police responses, and cases of sexual violence being socially mediated despite strict legal provisions.
According to NCRB 2023 data, conviction rates for crimes against women remain below 30 per cent in several states, while case pendency rates approach 90 per cent, highlighting serious delays in justice delivery.
The survey ultimately suggests that gender-based violence in India persists not due to a lack of laws, but because of deep-rooted societal beliefs, social conditioning, and norms that continue to go unchallenged.
