Congress MP Manish Tewari spoke in the Lok Sabha during the debate on electoral reforms. He said that the first major change needed is to amend the law that decides how members of the Election Commission are selected. He suggested that the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Chief Justice of India should also be part of the selection committee.
He also said that Special Electoral Review (SIR) is happening in many states, but the Election Commission has no legal authority to conduct it.
He added that he is not claiming that EVMs are being tampered with, but the public is worried that EVMs could be misused. He said he still has not received an answer to his question: “Who has the source code of the EVMs?”
Manish Tewari demanded that the government present written reasons to Parliament for conducting SIR in different constituencies. He said it is unfortunate that many MPs feel forced to question the neutrality of the Election Commission.
