Strong winds accelerated the spread of wildfires in parts of eastern and central North Macedonia on Monday, killing one elderly man and destroying houses. Firefighters and locals have been trying to get the wildfires under control in the landlocked Balkan country with the assistance of army and police helicopters and airplanes. The head of the National Center for Crisis Management, Stojanche Angelov, said in a video message that wind had caused fires to spread quickly since Monday afternoon and that a dozen villages had been affected.
