Why Purple Isn't Real—But Your Brain Sees It | WION Podcast

Purple isn’t technically a real colour in the visible light spectrum—it’s a mental construct created when our brain tries to reconcile the extremes of red and blue light. Unlike violet, which has its own wavelength, purple results from a perceptual trick. Since red and blue sit at opposite ends of the spectrum, the brain “bends” the spectrum into a circle to combine them, producing the colour we perceive as purple. This optical illusion highlights the brain’s incredible ability to interpret visual input.
