Why Is Garmin inReach GPS Device Banned In India? Scottish Hiker Detained At Airport
On January 2nd, a Scottish hiker named Heather, en route to Rishikesh from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport was detained. No, it was not for smuggling of gold or drugs, but for carrying the Garmin inReach GPS device, which of course, is banned in India.
Heather shared a video of her experience and cautioned travellers to avoid this mistake.
This Swiss-based GPS device is illegal in India and many other nations including Afghanistan, Cuba, Iran and North Korea.
Garmin inReach is a Swiss-based popular GPS and satellite messaging device, which is a constant find among backpackers and hikers. It is considered an essential for climbers.
