Who Is Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo XIV And The First American Pope?

On May 8, as the world waited with bated breath, the Cardinal of Conclaves in the Vatican made a monumental decision- to elevate an American Cardinal to the office of Pope. This is considered significant as it has long been held as an unstated rule that the Conclave would never elect an American Pope. This is largely ascribed to the US’ outsized global influence and status as a ‘superpower’.
And so, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost was not considered a favourite to become Pope.
And yet, there were factors in his favour. To begin with, Cardinal Prevost was elevated to the position of Cardinal by the late Pope Francis himself.
Moreover, he was given responsibility for the office that vets potential bishops. It should also be noted that, despite being born in America, Pope Leo XIV spent much of his life in Peru, first as a missionary and then as a Bishop.
Like Pope Francis, Pope Leo XIV is known for his outreach to the poor and needy and was even called the ‘Saint of the North’ in Peru for his charitable efforts.
