This week US President Donald Trump hosted his new ‘best friend’ Nayib Bukele at the White House. Bukele is the young and overwhelmingly popular leader of the nation of El Salvador.
Bukele, a social media-savvy former ad-man, swept to power in El Salvador with a promise of reform. He not only vowed to fix El Salvador’s image as the ‘murder capital of the world’ but also said that he would revive the economic fortunes of one of the poorest nations.
Bukele’s strong on crime image and slick public persona has made him popular in the US, particularly with Republican allies of Donald Trump.
