Former Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Veena Sikri, has termed the ‘July National Charter of 2025’ an ‘unconstitutional document’, asserting that the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus had no authority to initiate constitutional reforms. Speaking on the landslide victory of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) led by Tarique Rahman, Sikri congratulated the people of Bangladesh for choosing democracy over the ‘exhortations’ of Jamaat-e-Islami. She noted that the BNP’s return marks a potential ‘new reset’ for India-Bangladesh relations, highlighting that Tarique Rahman has been ‘saying good things about India’. Sikri, who served as High Commissioner during the BNP’s 2003-2006 tenure, suggested that ousted leader Sheikh Hasina should congratulate Rahman. She further called for Muhammad Yunus to ‘be shown the door’ following the election results, arguing that the influence of Pakistan and Western powers in the previous interim dispensation should now be ‘out of the window’.
