What’s Causing IAF’s Aging Jaguars To Crash? | The Long Form Story
Two pilots lost their lives when a SEPECAT Jaguar fighter jet of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Churu in Rajasthan on July 9, marking the third Jaguar crash since March this year. The incident has once again spotlighted the safety and relevance of India’s ageing Jaguar fleet, which has been in service for nearly five decades.
Earlier this year, on April 3, a Jaguar crashed in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, claiming the life of Flight Lieutenant Siddharth Yadav. Before that, on March 7, another Jaguar went down during a routine sortie near Panchkula, Haryana. These back-to-back mishaps have raised serious concerns over why the IAF continues to operate these vintage Anglo-French jets, originally designed in the 1960s and inducted into Indian service in the 1970s.
While countries like the UK, France, Oman, and Nigeria retired their Jaguars years ago, India remains the world’s only air force still flying these twin-engine fighters, with around six squadrons active — and plans to keep them operational until at least 2040. The crashes have sparked a fresh debate about the risks of keeping these ageing warbirds in service.
