Scientists in Egypt have discovered a 43-million-year-old fossil of a previously unknown four-legged whale species, Phiomicetus anubis. Unearthed from the Fayum Depression, the fossil represents a key transitional species between land and sea animals. Belonging to the extinct Protocetidae family, it was about 3 meters long and weighed around 600 kg. This semi-aquatic predator is the most primitive protocetid whale found in Africa and sheds light on early whale evolution. Named after Anubis, the ancient Egyptian god, the find is a major milestone in African paleontology.
