A political conflict is unfolding in West Bengal after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at offices of the political consultancy I-PAC, reportedly linked to a coal pilferage case. The ED has accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of obstructing their investigation and removing evidence during the raid. In response, Banerjee led a large protest march in Kolkata, accusing the BJP-led central government of misusing federal agencies for political purposes before the 2026 assembly polls. The situation escalated with the detention of protesting TMC MPs in Delhi and legal challenges in the Calcutta High Court, where the ED has sought a CBI probe into the alleged obstruction. The BJP has questioned the presence of government files at the I-PAC office and described the events as a "breakdown of constitutional machinery." Conversely, the TMC frames the issue as a politically motivated "crisis of federalism."
