Week 5 of the West Asia war sees escalating tensions as Iran intensifies retaliatory strikes across the Gulf, targeting assets and forcing Washington to reconsider its military strategy. Iranian strikes on Saudi Arabia’s Prince Sultan Air Base have wounded 12 American troops, with total wounded American service members now exceeding 300. Pentagon is actively preparing for the possibility of sustained ground operations inside Iran, including high-risk special operations raids backed by conventional infantry. The final decision rests with the President of the United States, who has not yet given the green light. Washington is reinforcing its military footprint with the USS Tripoli, carrying nearly 2,500 Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, entering the region. The USS Boxer, along with two additional warships and another Marine Expeditionary Unit, has deployed from San Diego. The US strategy aims to strike deep into Iran’s infrastructure, targeting buried nuclear sites, oil facilities and military hubs to cripple Tehran’s capabilities and dominate the battlefield narrative.
