The conflict in West Asia has disrupted global gas supplies, tightening LPG availability across several Indian cities, forcing restaurants to shut, cut menus and ration fuel. India consumes more than 5,200 million cubic metres of gas every month, with less than half produced domestically. A major share of India’s LNG imports comes from Qatar, which has recently declared force majeure. Restaurants in Tamil Nadu, Hyderabad, Bhopal and Kolkata are facing acute shortages, with some halting operations entirely. To tackle the situation, the central government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act, set up an oil ministry panel to examine supply disruptions, asked refineries to maximise LPG output, and extended the LPG refill booking cycle. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri met Prime Minister Modi with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar present to review the situation. Government sources told India Today that since yesterday, refineries have increased LPG production by 10 per cent. Oil companies are prioritising LPG supplies for households and essential services.
