In a significant political development ahead of West Bengal polls, Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM has announced an alliance with former TMC MLA Humayun Kabir, who heads the Anjanta Unayen party. The move is particularly striking given that AIMIM had ruled out any alliance with Kabir in December and had even called him a BJP B team. The alliance poses a major challenge to Mamata Banerjee as it threatens to split the Muslim vote, a bloc that has consistently backed the TMC. Muslims constitute about 27% of Bengal’s population and influence over 100 seats, especially in Murshidabad, Malda and the 24 Parganas. Community support for TMC rose from 22% in 2006 to nearly 75% in 2021. The TMC has downplayed the threat, whilst the Congress has raised questions over the intent and timing of the alliance. The minority vote bank in Bengal may be fragmenting, posing a significant challenge for the Chief Minister.
