Eddie Fishman, author of Choke Points, American Power in the Age of Economic Warfare and senior fellow at the Center for Foreign Relations in New York, discussed the strategic significance of the Strait of Hormuz in the ongoing conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States. He explained that Iran has established psychological deterrence over the strait without physically blocking it, stating, ‘Iran has shown why choke points are the absolute central factor in geopolitics today.’ Fishman noted that by closing the strait for a few weeks, Iran has ‘gotten concessions that in some ways go beyond what they got in 2015’ during the nuclear deal negotiations. He highlighted that the Trump administration now has ‘one solitary objective, and that is to reopen the strait and get the global economy going again.’ Fishman emphasised that geographic and economic choke points will be the central battlefields of global power in the 21st century, with Iran demonstrating higher pain tolerance than the United States in this economic war.
