The West Asia conflict enters its seventh day with no signs of de-escalation. US President Donald Trump stated that Mojtaba Khamenei, son of assassinated Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is an unacceptable choice as Iran’s successor, adding that the US must be involved in choosing Iran’s future leader. Trump claimed the US is in a strong position while Iran’s leadership is rapidly weakening. The conflict has expanded beyond the Middle East, with missiles intercepted in Turkey and a drone crashing into Nakhchivan airport terminal in Azerbaijan, which Azerbaijan claims Iran was behind. Tehran has denied the allegation. Azerbaijan has shut its southern airspace and summoned the Iranian envoy. European leaders are preparing for escalation, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announcing Europe will send anti-aircraft aid and naval assets to protect regional partners including Cyprus. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced the UK will send four additional Typhoon jets to Qatar.
