US President Donald Trump announces a five-day pause on planned military strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure and power plants, claiming Iran initiated contact seeking a ceasefire. In a Truth Social post, Trump states the US and Iran have held ‘very good and productive conversation’ over the past two days regarding resolution of hostilities in the Middle East. He has instructed the Department of War to postpone strikes, subject to the success of ongoing discussions. Trump emphasises Iran ‘badly wants to make a deal’ and insists he received the call from Iran, not the other way around. He concedes not having heard from Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei, speculating he may be dead. Trump indicates any deal must include Iran abandoning nuclear weapons development. He claims Israel has been briefed and will be happy with the outcome, calling it potential ‘long-term peace’ and ‘guaranteed peace’ for Israel if successful.
