US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has requested a ceasefire, stating that Iran’s new regime president, described as ‘much less radicalized and far more intelligent than his predecessors’, has approached the United States. Trump stated that the US will consider a ceasefire ‘when Hormuz trade is open, free, and clear. Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion, or as they say, back to the stone ages.’ Iran has previously denied several claims made by Trump regarding negotiations. The US President is scheduled to deliver a statement on the West Asia conflict at 6.30am India time. India Today’s Geeta Mohan suggests Trump may be seeking an exit strategy whilst maintaining that Iran requested the ceasefire, allowing him to claim victory. Iran has laid down five conditions and maintains it is not in direct talks with the US, though back channels remain active. The conflict has led to rising fuel prices in America, impacting Trump’s domestic support.
