Russian President Vladimir Putin made an unannounced visit to the Kursk region on May 20, 2025, marking his first trip there since Russian forces expelled Ukrainian troops from the area in April. During the visit, Putin toured the under-construction Kursk Nuclear Power Plant-2 and met with local officials and volunteer organizations, including acting regional Governor Alexander Khinshtein and Kremlin First Deputy Chief of Staff Sergei Kiriyenko.
