On Tuesday, a terrifying shake in the South Pacific nation of Vanuatu was centered 30 kilometers offshore at a depth of 57 kilometers. The quake has been followed by hundreds of rattling aftershocks. The government initially confirmed 14 deaths. On Wednesday, it said nine had been verified by the hospital, but officials expected the number would rise.
