Vande Mataram Debate: Gaurav Gogoi Asks BJP Where Its 'Political Ancestors' Were During 1942 Quit

In a fiery speech during the Lok Sabha debate on the 150th anniversary of ‘Vande Mataram’, Congress Deputy Leader Gaurav Gogoi launched a scathing attack on the BJP and RSS. Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s criticism of the Congress party’s 1937 decision regarding the national song, Gogoi questioned the contribution of the BJP’s ‘political ancestors’ to the freedom struggle. He asked, ‘I want to ask when your political ancestors fulfilled the intention of Vande Mataram? When did you rebel against the British?’ Gogoi also accused the ruling party of failing to understand the cultural legacy of Bengal and Rabindranath Tagore, and highlighted the plight of Bengalis facing the ‘D-voter’ issue in Assam. He asserted that while the Congress accepted ‘Vande Mataram’ as the national song, it also respected the ‘Jana Gana Mana’ as the national anthem, emphasizing the inclusive nationalism of the Constitution.
