In an exclusive interview with India Today, Professor Vali Nasr, Professor of International Affairs at Johns Hopkins University and leading scholar on Iran, analysed the ongoing West Asia conflict between Iran and the Israel-US axis. Nasr described the situation as an existential war for Iran, stating, ‘The country is now geared towards an existential moment largely because it’s also facing two qualitatively superior militaries.’ He explained that the bombing campaign targets not just military infrastructure but hospitals, schools, and civilian facilities across Iran. Nasr noted that while many Iranians are tired of the regime, they are also angry at the devastation of their homeland. He warned of two potential scenarios: either the Iranian state collapses into chaos similar to Syria or Libya, or the Islamic Republic survives as a hardened, isolated government. Nasr also discussed Iran’s strategy of broadening the war to Gulf countries and targeting global energy supply chains to create economic deterrence.
