At least 5 people are dead, while dozens more remain missing after a cloudburst triggered flash floods and landslides in the Uttarkashi district. The massive deluge that swept through the Dharali village washed away entire structures including homes, hotels, business establishments and even parts of an army camp.
Rescue teams are working round the clock to search for any survivors in the difficult weather and terrain.
But the question that needs to be asked is this:
When incidents like this happen: Is it just a natural tragedy, over which humans have no control?
Or is this the result of unmitigated development and construction, that cares very little of the fragility of the ecosystems where these human settlements are built?
