On August 5, a cloudburst in the upper reaches of Harsil led to a massive flash flood, reminiscent of the 2013 Kedarnath disaster. The deluge washed away parts of the Gangotri Highway and devastated the Army’s lower camp in Harsil. The camp, which included a mess, VIP mess, and 10 to 12 buildings, along with vehicles and trucks, was completely destroyed. The area is now covered in large boulders, debris, and sand. The flood also brought destruction to Dharali village and the wider Harsil valley. Eight Army jawans and one JCO, along with eight civilians and several tourists, are missing. Rescue and relief operations by the Army, ITBP, and NDRF are underway, but were hampered by bad weather. "Aath civilian Jo vahaan pe rahate Hain Jo confirmed Hain missing hai hamaare door camp Mein jab Mercedes aayat uske kaaran Ek desiyon aur Aath jawan usmein wo abhi Tak Pata hai."
