China has denied carrying out secret nuclear weapons tests after U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that Beijing and other countries were engaged in undisclosed underground testing. Speaking to reporters, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China has adhered to its long-standing moratorium on nuclear testing and remains committed to a policy of “no first use” of nuclear weapons.
Trump said in a television interview that China and Russia were conducting nuclear tests without publicly acknowledging them, though he did not provide evidence. He also suggested that North Korea and Pakistan were engaged in similar activity. The remarks come as Trump has ordered the U.S. Department of Defense to resume nuclear weapons testing, ending a decades-long pause.
China called on the United States to uphold the testing moratorium and take steps to maintain global strategic stability and the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.
