A US submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean, marking the first torpedo strike since World War Two, as confirmed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. James Rubin, former US Assistant Secretary of State in the Clinton administration and co-host of The X-Files podcast with Christiane Amanpour, discussed the escalating US-Iran conflict with India Today. Rubin stated that the United States is conducting ‘a massive operation around the world to destroy Iran’s military conventional ballistic missile capability’. He noted that while the US military is destroying Iranian conventional capabilities, the regime may still survive due to its ideological foundation. Rubin expressed concern about unclear war objectives, noting that the administration has shifted between regime change, preventing nuclear capability, and degrading military assets. He highlighted that Iran has attacked multiple countries including Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Jordan. Rubin suggested negotiations may begin in several weeks, emphasising the need for US diplomacy to limit the war’s expanding scope, particularly in the Indian Ocean region.
