A US submarine has sunk an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka using a torpedo strike, marking the first sinking of an enemy ship by torpedo since World War II. Satellite images released by the Pentagon show the moment the torpedo hit the Iranian naval vessel Iris Dina, sending it to the bottom of the Indian Ocean. According to US Central Command, the strike is part of a wider naval campaign that has destroyed more than 20 Iranian vessels, including Soleimani-class warships. Pentagon officials stated that over 2,000 targets have been hit, and Iran’s major naval presence in the theatre has been effectively neutralised. One submarine has also been destroyed in the campaign. CENTCOM announced plans to continue striking infrastructure and naval capability over the next 24 to 48 hours, with intelligence and surveillance resources currently focused on hunting ballistic missile launchers.
