A United States Navy submarine torpedoed and sank an Iranian Navy corvette, Dana, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka, marking the first sinking of an enemy ship by torpedo since World War II. The vessel was reportedly returning from naval exercises in India, including the Milan exercise off Visakhapatnam and the International Fleet Review in the Bay of Bengal. Sri Lanka’s deputy foreign minister confirmed that approximately 80 sailors were on board, with a large number feared dead after the ship sent out a distress signal. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike, stating that the United States has sunk 20 Iranian warships and one submarine, aiming to ensure Iran no longer has an operational navy. Sri Lankan opposition MP Namal Rajapaksa raised security concerns, questioning whether the Sri Lankan government was aware of the operation and calling for India to play a pivotal role in maintaining regional stability.
