A US Navy submarine sank the Iranian warship Dana, a frigate, in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka near Galle. Separately, a Soleimani-class corvette was sunk in the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial shipping lane. US President Donald Trump stated that American warships will escort tankers and ensure safe passage through the strait if necessary. The Soleimani-class corvettes are Iran’s most modern missile ships, built in 2022 and named after General Qasem Soleimani, who was killed on Trump’s orders during his first tenure. The incident near Sri Lanka occurred in international waters, raising concerns among Indian Ocean region countries about the expanding conflict zone reaching closer to their shores.
