The United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker linked to Venezuelan oil after a weeks-long pursuit across the North Atlantic near Iceland, part of Washington’s enforcement of sanctions and pressure campaign against illicit Venezuelan oil exports. The vessel, renamed the Marinera, was intercepted by US forces including the Coast Guard, marking one of the first known seizures of a Russian-flagged ship. Moscow has strongly condemned the action as a violation of maritime law and “outright piracy,” demanding humane treatment for the Russian crew and calling the seizure illegal in international waters. Tensions between Washington and Moscow remain high as geopolitical fallout continues.
