A detailed analysis reveals the United States’ three-phase military strategy to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, described as a high-risk operation with no guaranteed outcome. Phase 1 focuses on neutralising Iranian military assets including fast-attack boats, coastal missile systems and naval mines, with possible ground troop deployment. Phase 2 centres on mine-clearing operations, with Iran reportedly having already deployed naval mines along key routes and believed to have stockpiled up to 6,000 naval mines. Phase 3 involves US escorting oil tankers through the strait. The operation faces significant challenges from Iran’s layered defence system, including anti-ship missiles, drones, explosive-laden speedboats designed for swarm attacks, and weapons concealed in caves, tunnels and fortified coastal bases. Despite intensified US strikes destroying more than 120 vessels and targeting underground missile bunkers and coastal infrastructure, Iran’s defences remain intact. Mine clearing could take one to three weeks, disrupting maritime traffic, whilst the narrow geography leaves minimal reaction time during attacks.
