India Today discusses the United States testing its Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile amid the ongoing conflict with Iran. Dr Sudhir Kumar Mishra, former Director General of the Defense Research and Development Organisation and former MD of BrahMos Aerospace, suggests the test appears routine as the US Air Force Strike Command conducted two tests last year in May and November, maintaining a six-month schedule. However, he believes it carries an indirect message to China regarding Taiwan and to North Korea against any adventurism. The discussion also covers the expiration of the New START Treaty limit on 5th February, which for the first time since the 1970s removes caps on US and Russian nuclear arsenals. Mishra clarifies that India does not require intercontinental ballistic missiles as the country’s threat perception lies within 6000 kilometres, and current intermediate-range ballistic missiles adequately fulfil strategic requirements.
