US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has stated that escalation may be necessary to wind down the conflict with Iran, responding to questions about whether President Donald Trump is escalating or de-escalating the war. Speaking on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press’, Bessent remarked that the two approaches are ‘not mutually exclusive’ and that ‘sometimes you have to escalate to de-escalate’. This comes after Trump threatened to obliterate Iranian energy plants if Tehran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz. When asked about reports that Trump is considering sending troops into Iran, Bessent declined to reveal specific plans, stating that the President is ‘leaving all options on the table’. The conflict has now entered its fourth week, with European nations calling for a ceasefire before assisting in securing the Strait of Hormuz. The prolonged war continues to create global concerns, particularly regarding the deepening energy crisis affecting countries beyond the three nations directly involved in the conflict.
