In 21 days of escalating conflict with Iran, the United States has lost at least 16 military aircraft, including F-35 and F-15 fighter jets, KC-135 tankers and Reaper drones, as per reports. On March 19, an F-35, America’s most advanced stealth fighter jet, was hit in combat for the first time in its operational history. While former US President Donald Trump claims the aircraft made an emergency landing at a base in the Middle East, Iran claimed it had crashed. Three F-15 jets were reportedly hit by friendly fire. A KC-135 Stratotanker was lost during a refueling operation, resulting in the deaths of all six crew members on board. Iranian missile strikes at an airfield in Saudi Arabia damaged five KC-135 tankers. Costs have soared to $11 billion in the first week, with Trump now seeking $200 billion to fund the war. Iran has kept up a steady pace of strikes around the region, forcing American forces to dig deeper as the conflict threatens to stretch US military capacity to its limits.
