A United States submarine sank an Iranian warship, IRIS Dena, off the southern coast of Sri Lanka using a torpedo, confirmed US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The vessel had recently participated in the International Fleet Review 2025 in Vishakhapatnam, India, and was returning to Iran. Sri Lankan authorities confirmed at least 80 people on board were killed, with 32 rescued and several bodies recovered from the sea. The injured are being treated in Galle. This marks only the fourth time since World War II that a submarine has sunk a warship. The incident occurred in international waters close to India’s maritime zone, raising concerns about regional security. Dr Hoshang Amirahmadi, President of the American Iranian Council, described the conflict as illegal and indiscriminate, stating Iran can absorb the war indefinitely. The sinking expands the theatre of the ongoing West Asia conflict into the Indian Ocean region.
