A US submarine sank Iranian warship IRIS Dena off the southern coast of Sri Lanka, confirmed by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The vessel was returning from the International Fleet Review 2025 held in Vishakhapatnam, India, when it sank in international waters. Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister told parliament that approximately 180 people were on board. Sri Lankan authorities confirmed 32 people were rescued and several bodies recovered from the sea, with at least 80 personnel killed. The injured are being treated at a state-run hospital in Galle. This marks only the fourth warship sunk by a submarine since World War II, following incidents in 1971, 1982, and 2010. The Iranian vessel had participated in the Milan exercise hosted by India’s Eastern Naval Command from February 18-25, 2025, before beginning its return voyage to Iran.
