A blast in Bahrain on March 9 that injured more than 30 civilians may have been caused by a US-operated Patriot missile during an attempted interception of an Iranian drone, according to analysis reviewed by Reuters.
Bahrain has acknowledged that a Patriot air defence system was involved, stating it successfully intercepted an Iranian drone over a residential area, preventing a potentially deadlier strike.
However, independent analysis suggests the explosion may have resulted from the interceptor missile detonating mid-air over the neighbourhood.
The incident highlights the risks of using high-impact air defence systems in densely populated areas amid ongoing regional conflict.
