Over a fortnight into the West Asia war, Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has halted shipping and caused volatile oil prices, disrupting the gateway to 20 percent of global oil supply. US President Donald Trump has urged NATO allies across Europe and countries including South Korea, China, France, Japan and Britain to send warships for escort and policing to reopen the strait. However, the response has been tepid, with no country agreeing to join the naval coalition. Tehran maintains the strait is open to all except its enemies and their allies. With crude oil supply severely impacted, Japan has begun releasing oil from its strategic reserves. The closure continues to send shockwaves across the global economy as Trump shifts goalposts, leaving world capitals uncertain about the next steps in the West Asia conflict.
