US President Donald Trump has urged allies to support American operations in the Strait of Hormuz, claiming Iran’s naval capacity has been obliterated. Trump stated that the US has destroyed over 100 Iranian naval vessels and more than 30 mine-laying ships in the past week and a half, asserting ‘they’re all at the bottom of the sea’. He claimed a 90 percent reduction in Iranian ballistic missile launches and 95 percent reduction in drone attacks. Trump emphasised that countries whose economies depend heavily on the Strait should assist, noting Japan gets 95 percent of its oil through the waterway while the US gets less than 1 percent. However, most allied nations have issued statements refusing to participate militarily in the conflict. Defence analyst Sandeep Unnithan drew parallels to the 1980s tanker war, noting Trump appears to have entered the conflict without coalition preparations, despite the strait being only 30 kilometres wide and vulnerable to attacks.
