The Strait of Hormuz crisis is intensifying as Iran prepares to introduce separate protocols for commercial and military vessels, potentially altering navigation through the critical oil artery. The United Kingdom has convened over 40 nations for urgent talks to restore shipping. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mistry participated, highlighting the crisis’s impact on India’s energy security and noting that India is the only country to have lost mariners in an attack on merchant shipping in the Gulf. Mistry emphasised the need for de-escalation in West Asia. US President Donald Trump has stated that countries dependent on Hormuz, excluding the United States, must secure it themselves, warning non-cooperators are on their own. France has ruled out military solutions, advocating for coordinated diplomacy instead. The G7 and Gulf nations are scheduled to meet next week. India has maintained contact with Iran and other regional countries, successfully facilitating safe passage for six Indian ships carrying LPG, LNG and other products through the strait.
