A United States submarine sank an Iranian warship, the frigate Iris Dena, using a Mark 48 torpedo in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Sri Lanka. US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth confirmed the strike, describing it as the first sinking of an enemy ship by torpedo since World War II. Hegseth stated the operation is part of a wider campaign to neutralize Iran’s military capabilities, claiming over 2,000 targets have been hit and more than 20 Iranian naval vessels destroyed. James Rubin, former US Assistant Secretary of State, told India Today that while the US is destroying Iran’s conventional military capabilities, the regime may survive due to its ideological foundations. He questioned the clarity of US war objectives, noting they have shifted between regime change, nuclear prevention, and military degradation. Houshang AmirAhmadi, President of the American-Iranian Council, called the war completely illegal and warned that Iran, a nation of 92 million patriotic people, can absorb the war indefinitely.
