The Indian Navy has launched search and rescue operations after receiving a distress call from the Iranian frigate Iris Dana, which sank off the coast of Sri Lanka in the early hours of 4th March 2026. The ship was operating 20 nautical miles west of Galle in Sri Lankan waters when it went down. The Indian Navy deployed a long-range maritime patrol aircraft and naval vessels INS Tarangini and INS Ikshak to augment rescue efforts undertaken by the Sri Lankan Navy. The Sri Lankan Navy rescued approximately 30 crew members. The incident occurs amid escalating conflict between Iran, Israel, and the United States, which has now spread across the region. Iran claims to have lost 1,200 people in six days of conflict, while Israel reports 11 fatalities and the United States confirms six American personnel dead. The Iranian frigate had participated in India’s Milan exercise before returning home.
