After twenty-one hours of discussions in Islamabad, talks between the United States and Iran have ended without an agreement. The US delegation departed Pakistan as key issues remain unresolved, leaving the US administration to decide between extended negotiations over the nuclear programme of Iran or a return to conflict. A major flashpoint in the negotiations is the control of the Strait of Hormuz. The US demands that the strategic waterway remain free and independent, while Iran insists on having full control. The failure to reach a breakthrough presents the US administration with difficult choices, as a resumption of fighting could worsen the already massive energy disruption. The US President, who is currently in Florida, is expected to be briefed on the situation and will announce the next move soon. A naval blockade has been flagged as the biggest leverage for the US if Iran refuses to yield. The world watches closely to see whether diplomatic efforts continue or escalate into further conflict.
