Direct diplomatic negotiations between the United States and Iran have commenced in Islamabad, mediated by Pakistan’s military leadership. The American delegation, led by the Vice President, is meeting with an Iranian team including the Parliament Speaker and Foreign Minister to discuss a regional ceasefire and de-escalation. Iran has demanded the release of frozen assets, war reparations, and absolute sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, including toll collection rights. Tensions persist as Iranian forces recently forced a US Navy ship to retreat from the Strait under threat of engagement. In response, the US President announced the deployment of advanced minesweeping equipment to the maritime choke point.
