The high-stakes Islamabad peace talks between the United States and Iran have completely collapsed after twenty-one hours of negotiations. The US Vice President confirmed in a press briefing that the discussions hit a wall because the Iranian delegation refused to accept American terms regarding their nuclear programme. The core demand from the United States was a clear and verifiable commitment that Iran would not develop nuclear weapons in the future. Despite the US presenting its final and best offer, and noting that enrichment facilities had already been destroyed, Iran rejected the terms and provided no such guarantees. Consequently, the US delegation is returning empty-handed to brief the US President, who was kept in constant communication throughout the talks. The failure to reach even a partial deal raises significant concerns about the future. The negotiations were the basis of a ceasefire agreed upon after thirty-nine days of war, and with no breakthrough achieved, there are fears that the armed conflict could resume.
